HINANO HAYAMA

HINANO HAYAMA

Hinano Hayama (b. 1995) lives and works in Hokkaido, Japan. Her unique process of creating works does not begin with a concrete image in mind. Before she begins to paint or draw, she focuses on her physical sensations and translates these momentary feelings onto the canvas. The next strokes are always an immediate reaction to what she has just created on the canvas. Rather than having a thought in mind that she wants to depict in her paintings, her deeply rooted intuitive painting shapes the path of thoughts that flow through her mind in her state of creation. Her paintings can be seen as a layering of momentary feelings, reactions to what she has created, and a visualisation of her thoughts. Hinano Hayama describes that "the layered paintings show where she is at the moment".

After her residency at Chateau Orquevaux, Hinano Hayama realised how living in nature enhanced her artistic creation. After years of living in Tokyo, she decided to move to a remote area in Hokkaido, where nature continues to inspire her work. In addition, the serene atmosphere of the northern Japanese island helps her in the introspective process of creation

Lechbinska Gallery Online Show - Things that brought me here

Hinano Hayama, a young Japanese artist, abandoned the frenetic pace of Tokyo to seek inspiration in a more serene place, immersed in nature, Hokkaido.

Hinano's creative approach, drawing from instinct and intuition, translates into vibrant and evocative artworks. She let herself carried away by the physical sensations of the moment, by fleeting emotions, discovering in the process what type of brushstroke will follow the previous one.

To maximise her productivity, Hinano adheres to a special routine, dedicating at least three hours daily to work on multiple paintings simultaneously. Her creative process commences with meditation, a reflective pause that fosters the expression of the feelings she seeks to convey through her art. The crescendo of her painting technique mirrors her emotional ascent, starting with small brushstrokes and evolving into broader ones. The result is paintings on canvas or ceramic of a lively and varied colour palette, revealing sometimes enigmatic visions, with figures emerging like faded dreams. Small-scale artworks become vessels of emotions, while larger paintings are like pages of a diary, narrating memories from her childhood, journeys, and her youth.
